Biochar, products, services, & technology
for a carbon-smart future.
Terra Char is the brand name of our quality biochar, which is made from ligneous biomass, and is known for its low moisture and high fixed carbon content. (>76%) These traits make Terra Char biochar ideal for use in agriculture. That being said, we are constantly expanding our knowledge, and working with new companies & products to explore biochar's rapidly expanding number of benefits, including those related to soil, crops, livestock, water, energy, construction, packaging, and the climate.
Our long term goal is to use biomass pyrolysis to produce heat, biofuel & power, as well as biochar, to make small businesses & communities self-sustaining.
We look forward to working with others to preserve our soil, produce renewable energy, and make a better world for future generations.
Terra Char and soil: Terra Char is committed to transform agriculture by guiding farmers to adopt modern biological, carbon-smart methods of soil regeneration, fertility management, carbon sequestration, and healthy food production.
Carbon-Smart Agriculture relies less on chemicals and synthetic fertilizers, more on soil biology, probiotic treatments & holistic management to optimize soil carbon, minerals & microbes.
What is best for soil is best for us.
Terra Char and livestock/poultry: Research data from several countries show that adding 1 to 3% biochar to cattle feed can improve feed efficiency 22%, reduce methane 28% and increase daily weight gain significantly. Biochar feeding has other documented benefits to improve digestive efficiency, animal health, and farm profits. Biochar has a strong appetite to adsorb gases, liquids and ions, and ammonia, which means that it can reduce—even eliminate—gases and odors from manure and urine, especially ammonia. Research at several universities shows inoculated carbon captures up to 63% of ammonia emitted from poultry poop. Char also curbs methane, nitrous oxide, hydrogen sulfide, urea, organic acids, ketones, volatile vapors, and noxious liquids.
Terra Char and climate change: Biochar can actually reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by transforming the carbon in biomass into stable carbon structures. According to this study (and others), biochar implementation could offset as much as 12% of anthropogenic GHG emissions on an annual basis.
Terra Char is a blend of biochar products, charged with nutrients and inoculated with microbes to unleash a biological explosion in soil. Terra Char products deliver a full spectrum of fertility to provide rapid results that growers expect. Terra Char products support and sustain a smooth shift from chemical to biological fertility, custom adapted to a farm's soils, crops and operations
Terra Char isn't just about products. We also supply services and technology to support growers for the transition to 21st century agriculture. We assist growers to boost soil carbon, optimize fertility, revive soil biology, increase soil health, decrease water use, curb nutrient loss, reduce costs, improve profitability. We guide growers to bring full spectrum minerals, beneficial microbes, cover crops, and other essentials into their soils and farm systems.
Minerals are the foundation of biology. Carbon-Smart Farming begins with soil tests to monitor and modify soil mineral levels and ratios. Terra Char products use rockdusts, sea minerals and sea products to deliver major minerals and complete the trace elements. Disturbed soils need up to three years to get minerals in functional balance and grow biology to sustain those mineral levels.
Microbes are another Terra Char soil enhancement. Balanced minerals and carbon yields a thriving colonies of beneficial microbes. Terra Char products use several cultures of bacteria and fungi to jumpstart soil biology, soften soil structure and heighten crop nutrient response. Ultimately, microbes are the keystones to fully fertile soil. Their survival and proliferation in soil is the biological farmer's best assurance of success.
Metabolites, the third class of Terra Char products, are supplemental bionutrients to stimulate microbes to heightened reproduction, growth and function. These soil additives aren't plant fertilizers, but starter food for microbes to activate and grow the Soil Food Web, and nurse microbe populations while soil is replenished, repaired and rebuilt. Tiny amounts of microbial metabolites yield a great, rapid boost to fertility and function.
Soil Regeneration begins by increasing Carbon, the third essential element of life. Biochar is super-stable form of Carbon that holds water, nutrient ions and electrons in soil, and provides habitat for populations of beneficial microbes to form a Soil Food Web. Biochar is a substrate to hold and deliver minerals and microbes to soils, and a catalyst to boost microbial activity and digestion. Soil biology needs other forms of Carbon, including humus, humid acids, humates, plant biomass, seaweed, protein, and other biocarbons.
Terra Char also develops biomass technology, equipment and facilities to produce and process biochar, and to also co-generate heat, electric power and biofuels. On-farm biochar & biofuel production can liberate farms from fossil fuels and imported chemistry.
American agriculture is at a crossroad. Farming is beginning a new Green Revolution in technology, methods and materials. The new mindset understands Nature is not just molecules and chemistry, but also biology and energy, and seeks to work with microbes as allies.
Terra Char is grateful to be at the leading edge in this exciting time, supporting farmers and ranchers to step into the 21st century future of farming.
