Collaboration for Climate-Ready Agriculture
In 2025, TerraChar® expanded its mission to advance environmental innovation by partnering with the University of Missouri (Mizzou) — one of the nation’s leading agricultural research institutions. Together, the two organizations are deepening the scientific understanding of how biochar can strengthen soil systems, support crop resilience, and capture atmospheric carbon.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to transforming research into practical solutions for farmers, researchers, and industries that depend on healthy soils.

Research Highlights: Biochar’s Role in Cotton Production
The University of Missouri research team, led by experts in plant and soil sciences, recently published a comprehensive study on the use of biochar derived from sugarcane bagasse in cotton-growing regions of the Mississippi Delta. The findings confirmed that biochar significantly improved soil’s ability to retain nutrients and water — two of the biggest challenges in sandy and low-organic soils.
The study also revealed that biochar can reduce nitrate leaching, improving both soil fertility and water quality. These outcomes position biochar as a dual-benefit solution — advancing agricultural productivity while protecting environmental health.
TerraChar®’s Role in it's Partnership with University of Missouri
TerraChar® plays an instrumental role in this collaboration by supplying high-quality, U.S.-produced biochar for research and field applications. The company’s technical expertise and production consistency allow the Mizzou research team to test biochar formulations at scale, moving from small research plots to operational farms.
Building on the study’s success, TerraChar® is currently in the process of expanding production and facilitating additional purchases of premium biochar to support upcoming trials focused on corn and soybean crops.
From Laboratory Insight to Field Impact
This partnership bridges the gap between academic discovery and agricultural practice. Together, TerraChar® and the University of Missouri are working to evaluate biochar’s performance across different soil types and climatic conditions, ensuring that research findings translate into real-world benefits for farmers.
By scaling up field applications, the team aims to demonstrate measurable improvements in soil carbon, nutrient efficiency, and crop performance — paving the way for large-scale adoption across North America.
Shared Vision for a Regenerative Future
Both TerraChar® and the University of Missouri share a clear vision: a future where technology, sustainability, and agriculture work in harmony. Through joint research and innovation, they are building the foundation for long-term solutions that protect natural resources, enhance food security, and strengthen rural economies.
This collaboration is more than a study — it’s a model for how science and industry can work together to combat climate challenges and promote soil regeneration.
Looking Ahead
As research continues, TerraChar® remains committed to supporting evidence-based approaches that advance the biochar industry and empower sustainable farming systems.
From improving cotton and corn yields to capturing carbon beneath our feet, TerraChar® and the University of Missouri are proving that innovation and environmental responsibility can thrive side by side.
