Research Highlights: Biochar’s Role in Cotton Production

The University of Missouri research team, led by experts in plant and soil sciences, recently published a comprehensive study on the use of biochar derived from sugarcane bagasse in cotton-growing regions of the Mississippi Delta. The findings confirmed that biochar significantly improved soil’s ability to retain nutrients and water — two of the biggest challenges in sandy and low-organic soils.

The study also revealed that biochar can reduce nitrate leaching, improving both soil fertility and water quality. These outcomes position biochar as a dual-benefit solution — advancing agricultural productivity while protecting environmental health.

Building on the study’s success, TerraChar® is currently in the process of expanding production and facilitating additional purchases of premium biochar to support upcoming trials focused on corn and soybean crops.
